The Problem with Barriers

Barriers work against getting people to change behaviours. Think of them as forces working against someone performing preferred behaviours.

These impediments can take many forms. They can be physical, like poor placement of recycling containers. They can be a lack of required information, like how to know if a plant is invasive or not. Or they can be simply that a person always forgets and needs a reminder (like not putting the top back on the toothpaste tube).

There are many more types of barriers.

There are 2 important things you must do with respect to barriers when designing behaviour change campaigns:

1. Identify them
2. Remove them

Once you identify and remove them, the behaviour will become much easier and convenient to perform.
